Work placement in Engineering and Technology
Industrial (sandwich) placement
A 48 week (minimum) work placement is available on all of our courses during your third year. A placement provides an excellent opportunity to relate your studies to industrial practice and to gain valuable work experience .
The University Careers and Placement Service and the School will support you during your Second Year to secure the right placement for you.
We have a long history of helping our students to find stimulating and highly beneficial work placements as part of their course. Recent Engineering Placement vacancies have included:
- Red Bull
- Airbus Industrie in Toulouse and Bristol
- BAE Systems
- EADS Astrium
- National Grid
- Nestle UK
It is not uncommon for placement students to be subsequently offered a graduate position when they complete their studies in the same company where they spent their placement year.
A short term placement with a company is also a great way to gain experience. The Careers and Placement Service can help you here too.
Practical help and support
The University Careers and Placement Service will help and support you in how to:
- find a placement
- write an effective CV
- complete application forms
- prepare for interviews and assessments centres
- liaise with companies offering placement positions
A visiting tutor from the School will visit you in your placement during your year in industry to ensure things run well and that you are gaining benefit from your experience.
Students who take the sandwich option, spending a year on industrial placement as part of their undergraduate studies, can also gain Engineering Technician (EngTech) or ICT Technician (ICT Tech) status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) – depending on which is appropriate for their degree and the nature of the placement experience. This is additional recognition of your achievement over and above your sandwich degree award.
Contact the Careers, Employment and Enterprise Service if you have any queries or require more information about engineering placements.
