Computer Science Faqs

How many UCAS points are needed for entry to the BSc Computer Science?

A Computer Science student at workFor 2016 entry our minimum offer is 260 points. Most of our students have a higher number of points, but we have found that those with the minimum level can often achieve excellent degree results.

What are the entry qualifications for mature students?

We welcome applications from mature students. For students over 21, we consider formal qualifications less important than experience and motivation. Each case is considered individually.

Is the placement year on the BSc (Hons) degrees compulsory?

No, it is optional, but strongly advised. We recognise that, for some students, personal circumstances rule it out, but otherwise we have found that you are likely to benefit significantly. Students who opt to take a placement are not only more likely to obtain a good job on graduation, at a higher salary, but also to get a better class of degree.

Can a placement be guaranteed?

No. You have to apply and the employer needs to accept you. In recent years it has been difficult nationally to obtain a placement but if you have good first year results and are prepared to work hard at your application, you should stand a good chance.

Our Careers, Employment and Enterprise Service can help you to write your CV and prepare for interviews. We work with a large number of employers, many of whom employ students every year. We have built up an excellent relationship with these companies including many household names such as IBM, GSK, Microsoft, Oracle and Xerox.

Many students go on to work for their placement company after graduation.
