We have a strong commitment to excellence in diverse research that has a powerful impact on the wider world. It is central to the mission of the University and the experience of all students is enhanced through exposure to the extensive range of research and scholarship undertaken by our enthusiastic and competent staff.
The outcome of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework demonstrated that an impressive 57% of our research was world-leading and internationally excellent and with over 92% being of international quality.
Our research addresses important aspects of the major issues facing both business and society. It has been transformational, changing processes and lives, making a real impact on the world we live in. Examples of our impact can be found here and our impact specifically on policy, here.
The University takes its role in the community very seriously. To support the development of our vital public engagement work, we have signed the manifesto of the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE). Information about current public engagement projects can be seen here.
All our research is organised within six research themes: Food; Health and Wellbeing; Global Economy; Heritage, Cultures and Communities; Information and Security; and, Space. The themes, which focus on areas of major global challenge, bring together our research centres and research groups facilitating both interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research, while enabling the development and nurturing of research partnerships with other universities, industry, business and public/charity sector organisations.
These partnerships are drawn from across the world as well as in the UK, together with the local region which underlines the importance of our research role in the community.
